Egemen ÖZTÜRK1,İsmail ORAN1
1Ege Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, Radyoloji Anabilim Dalı, İzmir, Türkiye Spinal vascular malformations are a rare group of neurovascular diseases with an insidious onset and progressive course that can confine patients to a wheelchair within a few years if untreated. Over the years, with the maturation of angiographic vascular anatomy knowledge, the accumulation of surgical experience, and, above all, the development of catheter and embolization technology, superselective spinal angiography has made it possible to successfully treat many patients with a spinal vascular malformation. The biggest problem for these patients is that the disease may not be considered in the clinical and radiological differential diagnosis, and the diagnosis and hence the treatment is delayed. In this article, the pathophysiology, classification and predominantly radiological findings of spinal vascular malformations will be discussed. Spinal vascular malformations should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of patients with progressive paraparesis and sphincter dysfunction.
