The central and peripheral nervous systems operate through complex interactions in information flow and signal processing within neural networks. Chemical and electrical signal transmissions between neuronal components work together to process a range of stimuli that regulate the functions of organs through the central and peripheral nervous system. Connections in such networks can be physically and/or functionally disrupted in various pathological conditions. With the advent of neuromodulation, clinicians can now utilize minimally invasive techniques over conventional treatments to modify these abnormal connections and achieve symptom relief or complete recovery. Neuromodulation technology continues to advance, and its application areas are constantly expanding. However, for this technique to be successful, knowledge of all aspects of neuroscience is required. This review discusses selected approaches and future developments in current invasive neuromodulation applications in neurosurgery practice.
