Development of the nervous system begins in the early embryonic period and continues beyond birth. The embryo becomes a threelayer structure that will be a resource for all the tissues during the gastrulation period. There are many malformations of the nervous system. Various diseases are observed from childhood to the adult period according to the location and timing of the disruptions during embryological development. While some anomalies result in intrauterine or neonatal deaths, some of them are incidentally detected on magnetic resonance images obtained for other reasons. Some of them result in resistant epilepsy, mental retardation, cognitive dysfunctions, and disorders of the motor, sensory, and urinary system. In this review article, embryology of central nervous system in humans and the malformations due to developmental anomalies during the embryonic period will be explained.
