Pediatric spinal tumors are rare lesions. Such tumors cause several symptoms dictated by the biologic behavior, location, extent of involvement, and size of the tumor. Although most symptoms are non-specific and easily overlooked, back or neck pain is the most common presenting symptom. Patients may initially be asymptomatic or show nonspecific findings such as scoliosis. Magnetic resonance imaging is the most common imaging modality used. Functional sequences such as Diffusion Tensor Imaging and Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy can be useful in the diagnosis. These lesions can be classified as extradural tumors, intradural extramedullary tumors, and intramedullary spinal cord tumors. Although the treatment is based on the type of tumor, surgical resection is the mainstay. Methods such as neuromonitoring, intraoperative ultrasound use, and laminoplasty during surgical treatment may be beneficial in increasing the success and reducing the development of a postoperative deformity. The clinical outcome depends on histological grading, the extent of the excision, and the neurological status of the patient. The long-term management requires a multidisciplinary approach.
