¹Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydınlar Üniversitesi, Beyin ve Sinir Cerrahisi Departmanı, Pediatrik Nöroşirürji Bölümü, İstanbul, Türkiye Spasticity and movement disorders result in major disability during the daily activities of pediatric and adult patients. Perinatal hypoxia and genetic disorders are major etiologies in pediatric patients whereas in adults the leading causes are trauma and degenerative diseases. For this reason, the treatment of these disorders is also different in the pediatric and adult populations. In the pediatric population, the preferable treatment options are selective dorsal rhizotomy, neurotomy, and pallidotomy whereas in adults the preferable treatment options are baclophene pump, deep brain stimulation, and DREZotomy. In this paper we discuss spasticity, dystonia, and other movement disorders and the various treatment strategies in the pediatric and adult populations.
