OBJECTIVE: To portray the incidence, clinical presentation, diagnostic and therapeutic options, and prognosis of patients with aneurysmal bone cyst of the spine and to review the relevant literature.

METHODS: Six patients, who were treated for spinal aneurysmal bone cyst surgically between 1995 and 1997 in Neurosurgery and Orthopedics Departments, were presented with therapeutic interventions, results, and follow-up examinations.

RESULTS: The lesion was at thoracic level in 3 patients and at cervical, lumbar and sacral spines in different taree patients. Multiple-level involvement was diagnosed in 5 cases. Total removal was achieved in 4 patients, and bone grafting and stabilization with instrumentation were performed in 5 cases. One patient's lesion recurred 2 times, he was operated on 3 times and only this case received radiotherapy. There was no mortality in this series and no spinal deformity was recorded in the cases for mean 4.8-years follow-up period.

CONCLUSION: Current treatment options of aneurysmal bone cysts of the spine include preoperative selective arterial embolization, intralesional excision curettage, bone grafting, and fusion of the affected area if instability is present, and transcutaneous sclerotherapy.
