Spinous process wiring is widely used although there has been many specific materials for the posterior fixation of cervical spine. Majority of these implants cause artefacts in radiological examinations because of its steel base. We carried out tests with polyflaman polyester suture, monoflaman steel, and polyflaman steel wire. These materials were forced by a loading system where the force was measured by a full bridge force transducer. The calibration of the transducer is achieved by using an wheastone bridge and amplifier. The signals due to strain of material were collected by the help of data acquisition card via data logger. It was observed that the polyflaman polyester suture was broken when a 37 kg£. is applied whereas the monoflaman steel wire experienced plastic deformations with the application of 39 kgf. The polyflaman polyester suture and monoflaman steel wire showed similar ex tensional charactheristics under the same loading. Polyflaman steel wire experinced no deformation with the application of similar loadings. Our experiments indicate that the polyflaman polyester suture can be alternative for the fixation material in the cervical spine because of its rigidity, endurance and its proper behavior in radiological examinations.
