The most frequent cause of radicular pain unrelieved with surgery seems to be peridural fibrosis and many biological and non-biological materials used to prevent this. The effect of ADCON-L a polymer of carbohydrate is examined on annular fenestration model and laminatomy on rats. In the control group, laminatomy and annular fenestration and in the experimental group laminatomy, annular fenestration and ADCON-L administration were performed. Four weeks later vertebral column was excised and decalcified by sacrifying the rats. Five sections were examined according to the amount of scar tissue, peridural scar formation, dural adhesions, infections, foreign body reactions, the absorbtion of ADCON-L and the histopathological changes of the nerves. Tissue photographs were taken for the numerical evaluation of the peridural fibrosis. By centralizing the thecal sac, vertebral canal was divided in to four equal parts and the scar tissue was evaluated by percentage. The ADCON-L decreased the scar formation with statistically importance and absorbed at the end of the fourth week with no negative effect on wound healing. At the control group the scar tissue showed adherence to the nerve and dura and changed the whole normal anatomic structure (p<0.001). Consequently, ADCON-L administration decreases the post surgical dural adhesions and peridural fibrosis experimentally.
