The goal of this study was to investigate the necessity pathologic examination of disc material after cervical discectomy. A retrospective analysis of 467 patients who had been operated for cervical spinal compression and underwent a cervical discectomy procedure, were performed. In this review, 162 disc materials out of 636 evacuated disc spaces were found to be sent for pathologic examination in only 128 patients. Pathologic examinations were reported as degenerated fibrocartilaginous disc tissue and metastasis in 125 and 3 patients, respectively and they were completely in accordance with the diagnosis made upon clinical observations. These results support the idea that when a concensus is be made on other means of verification of disc material, no drawback will be encountered if pathologic examination is performed in case of surgeon's request only.
