The “Surgical Treatise by an Unknown Author” From the Ottoman Era and Its Chapters Related to Neurosurgery

AIM: In this work we aimed to introduce the chapters related to neurosurgery of the Surgical Treatise by an Unknown Author that is among various surgical treatises written during the periods of Seljuk and Ottomans.

MATERIAL and METHODS: Currently only two original copies of this treatise exist. One of these copies is registered by the number 729 in the Library of Istanbul Archeology Museum. In this work, the chapters regarding neurosurgical field were studied from this copy. The sections were firstly transcribed into the Latin alphabet and then translated into contemporary Turkish language.

RESULTS: In the last page of the copy it was stated that the book was completed in 1504. Five chapters of the treatise include neurosurgical subjects.

CONCLUSION: In this treatise, the unknown author summarized neurosurgery-related subjects, which were obviously obtained from previous leading authors' works, to produce a handbook for practical purposes. The treatise was comparable to the contemporary medical works of that particular time, by means of the knowledge and practical purposes it bears.
