Surgeon Mesud and Chapters Related to Neurosurgery in His Work “Hulasa-i Tibb”

AIM: One of the important surgical treatises of the Ottoman era which was translated by Surgeon Mesud and its chapters related to neurosurgery are presented in this study.

MATERIAL and METHODS: Ismihan Sultan 332 and Vahid Paşa 805 copies of the treatise were used for this study. After transcription to the Latin alphabet, the relevant sections were translated into contemporary Turkish.

RESULTS: The treatise is a translated compilation outlining the causes, findings and treatments of some diseases.

CONCLUSION: The treatise discusses the principles of medical treatment besides the surgical approaches and can be considered as a sample for the surgical interventions of both the 15th century Ottoman Empire and the period before the Islamic golden age of medicine (900-1100).
