Gazi Üniversitesi, Tıp Fakültesi, Nöroşirürji Anabilim Dalı, Ankara Brain tumors seem to have become more frequent in the last 30 years. The development in imaging techniques and their widespread use are the main reasons. Although meningiomas –one of the most frequent brain tumors- are mostly benign, they may have high morbidity and mortality rates in case of a critical localization. To date, the etiology of brain tumors are poorly understood. The goals of etiological and epidemiological studies dealing with meningiomas are to determine the risk factors, taking preventive measures in risk groups and building up a strategy for accurate diagnosis and treatment. The aim of this article was to review the results of current studies on the epidemiology and etiology of meningiomas.
