Özel Balat Hastanesi, Nöroşirürji Kliniği, İstanbul, Türkiye Intracranial aneurysm is a major public health problem with a high mortality and morbidity which affects 5 to 10% of the general population. Several risk factors like hypertension, smoking, excessive alcohol intake are associated with subarachnoid hemorrhage. It is believed to play a role of complex and multifactorial effects on the molecular pathogenesis, involving multiple loci and interaction of multiple genes. With the advanced of genome wide linkage studies one or more predisposing genes containing several chromosomal susceptible loci was identified. In future by the identification of these genes, the mechanisms of aneurysmal development and rupture will be understood thoroughly and appropriate therapies could be developed. The aim of this article was to review the current knowledge on the pathogenesis, risk factors and the genetics of the intracranial aneurysms.
