When medical treatment is an inadequate or cannot be used because of side eff ects, surgical treatment should be considered. There are three types of surgery currently available: lesioning (irreversible destruction), stimulation (reversible “stunning”), and grafting (transplantation of neurons, cells, or trophic factors).
