MATERIAL and METHODS: Sixteen case series comprising 340 foramen schwannomas published between 1984-2015 and review articles were inspected. Findings were grouped and summarized as symptomatology, classification, radiologic features, jugular foramen anatomy and surgical approaches.
RESULTS: Jugular foramen schwannoma is a benign nerve sheath tumor that is composed of completely well differentiated schwann cells. Jugular foramen schwannomas make up only 2.9% of all intracranial schwannomas. Surgery includes anterior, lateral and posterior approaches and various combinations of these. Gross total rates ranging between 24% and 100% have been reported. The most common surgical perioperative complications are CSF fistula, cranial nerve deficits and pneumonia. Due to recent advances, only a single mortality was reported among the inspected series.
CONCLUSION: Surgical treatment of jugular schwannomas is challenging due to relevant anatomy, although there has been technical advances in recent years. Radical resection is possible when accurate diagnosis is combined with a suitable surgical approach. Whenever radical resection cannot be achieved, radiosurgery may be applied as an adjunct or alternative treatment.
