In this paper, we are reporting a study of 59 cases of intracranial hydatid cysts and 1 cranial hydatidosis treated at the neurosurgical clinic of the Ankara Medical Faculty during the last 20 years. One of the patients died at ventriculography, the remaining were treated surgically. The 38 cases in which the cyst was removed intact with Dowling's technique, there was no mortality. In 20 cases in which Dowling's tecnique was not used and the cyst ruptured or punctured during surgery, 17 are alive and there were 3 deaths.
The hydatid cyst must be removed intact. But when the cyst is located at deep sites where the intact removal is not possible, the cyst space should be irrigated by 3 % saline 10 % formalin solution. When accidental ruptur occurs during surgical intervention the surrounding tissue must be irrigated by 3 % saline solution.
