Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: Epidemiology and Genetics
1Atakent Hastanesi, Nöroşirürji Kliniği, Yalova, Türkiye
Spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH); usually occurs after intracranial aneurysm rupture. The most important risk factors
of SAH are hypertension, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. In epidemiologic studies, first-degree relatives of SAH
patients were found to have a 3- to 7-fold higher risk compared to the general population. Environmental and genetic factors play a
role in the development of SAH and aneurysms and it is therefore called a complex disease. If a genetic determinant is detected in
the development of SAH and aneurysms, it will facilitate screening and early treatment. However, such screening is difficult because
of the complex structure of genetic diseases and the influence of multiple gene locations, the interaction between genes and the
unknown transmission characteristics. The aim of this article was to review the epidemiology and the genetics of SAH.
