Low-grade Gliomas

They display different anatomical localizations and clinical behaviour despite similar pathological appearance. Further, differences are also observed in response to treatment modalities. Low grade gliomas are classified as diffuse astrocytomas and oligodendrogliomas according to the World Health Organization 2016 central nervous system tumors classification. Molecular and genetic parameters have become more important in low grade gliomas with this classification. The aim of this review is to investigate the effects of molecular and genetic parameters associated with the new tumor classification on the behaviour and prognosis of low grade gliomas and to contribute to the development of new therapeutic modalities according to new studies. Diffuse astrocytomas and oligodendrogliomas are grade II tumors according to this classification. According to the isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) mutation, diffuse astrocytomas are classified as IDH-mutant, IDH-wild type and not otherwise specified. In oligodendrogliomas, the 1p-19q codeletion is identified with the IDH mutation. Oligodendogliomas are divided into two groups, IDH mutant with 1p-19q codeleted and undefined. Differences in tumor genetics are responsible for different behaviour patterns. IDH mutant and 1p-19q codeleted tumors have a better prognosis.
