Peripheral Nerve Surgery in Pediatric Cases: Differences from the Adult Cases
1Sağlık Bilimleri Üniversitesi, Gülhane Tıp Fakültesi, Beyin ve Sinir Cerrahisi AD, Ankara, Türkiye2Necmettin Erbakan Üniversitesi, Meram Tıp Fakültesi, Beyin ve Sinir Cerrahisi AD, Konya, Türkiye Peripheral nerve surgery is a type of surgery that is relatively less commonly used compared to spinal and cranial surgery but still important in neurosurgery practice. It is performed less frequently in childhood than in adulthood. This is because peripheral nerve injuries and tumors are less common in children than in adults and are more difficult to diagnose. In addition, we have little data on long-term sensorimotor and functional outcomes following surgical nerve repair in children. However, the higher neural plasticity in children causes better functional improvement than in adults. The better clinical outcomes in children probably indicate that the immature nervous system can adapt better and more easily to nerve damage.
