5İ.Ü. İstanbul Tıp Fakültesi, Nöropatoloji Bölümü, İstanbul OBJECTIVE: Petroclival tumour has always been a problem to choose the appropriate surgical approach to provide total mass resection with reasonable morbidity and mortality percents for the treatments of the tumours in this region. Our aim is to report the patients who are treated in our clinic because of petroclival region tumours and our surgical approach preferences on them, our clinic results and our experiences about this subject.
METHODS: The preferred surgical approaches on the 37 patients who are applied surgical resection because of petroclival mass among 153 patients who are being operated because of skullbase tumours between the dates of October 2000 – October 2005 in our clinic and the treatment results were studied as retrospective.
RESULTS: 25 of the patients are female and 12 of them are male. Total mass resection was %83.7 in 31 patients and subtotal mass resection was %16.3 in 6 patients.
CONCLUSION: Even today the information of deciding for the appropriate approach through only one patient is limited. The factors that determine the approach are; the existing lesion's nature the compartments effected by the lesion, the tumour's vascularization, aimed resection degree, relation with neurovascular structures and the most important is the surgeon's preference.
