Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Nöroşirürji Anabilim Dalı, İzmir Dr. Kankat is a less-known neurosurgeon, whose name is not known as well as other Turkish neurosurgeon in the first part of 20. century. After training of neurosurgery in France in early 1930's, he returned to Turkey and established a private hospital, Şişli Cerrahi Kliniği. He performed several neurosurgical operations beside other surgeries. Dr. Kankat published the first neurosurgery journal of Turkey, "Modern Cerrahi ve Nöroşirürji Mecmuası", in the years between 1936 and 1947. He published some books and several manuscripts in this journal and other journals of that time. Taking studies and publications of Dr. Kankat into consideration, the name of Dr. Kankat deserves to be well placed in the history of Turkish neurosurgery.
